Indication has emerged on how the sacked Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and his core loyalists created a disturbing scene in Kano.
This development prompted Governor Abba Yusuf to order the arrest of the dethroned Bayero, whose whereabouts had been unknown since his dismissal on Thursday. Bayero arrived in the ancient city on Saturday to a welcoming crowd of supporters at the airport, but Governor Yusuf swiftly issued the arrest directive upon his arrival.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Director General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Kano, Sanusi Tofa, the Governor cited Bayero’s alleged role in creating tension in the state as the reason for the arrest order.
Reports have it that the aircraft which conveyed the dethroned Emir landed at the Aminu Kano International airport at 4:30am. He was immediately thronged by his supporters chanting a verse from Surah Al-Fatihah in the Holy Quoran.
“You (alone) we worship, and you (alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).”
While some others were saying, “God the Almighty will kill your enemies.”
The former Emir, who was fully dressed in royal regalia, did not respond to the crowd as he took his steps consciously. He later observed Subhi (dawn prayer) at the airport.
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) controlled House of Assembly repealed the law signed by ex-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, which split the emirates into five and appointed Emirs for each. Governor Yusuf, after signing the repealed law, gave all affected Emirs 48 hours to vacate their palaces and hand over to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. He subsequently reinstated Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, who was deposed by Ganduje in 2020.
Sanusi arrived at the palace accompanied by the Governor, the Deputy Governor, the Speaker, and other top government functionaries around 1 am on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
A statement titled ‘Gov. Yusuf Orders Arrest of Deposed Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero’ stated, “The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, ordered the immediate arrest of Bayero, for creating tension in the state.”
The statement added, “As the Chief Security Officer of the state, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect for disturbing public peace and attempting to destroy the relative peace the state enjoys.”
