Euphoria star Hunter Schafer stole the show at the Berlin Film Festival press conference on Friday for Tilman Singer’s horror movie Cuckoo which is world premiering at the city’s 2,500-capacity Verti Music Hall this evening.
Schafer stars as Gretchen who travels to a resort town in German Alps with her father and stepmother where she is drawn into a conspiracy involving bizarre experiments by the resort’s owner that echo back generations.
Following press screenings ahead of this evening’s premiere, the movie is already generating buzz among genre and horror fans.
Hailed as a new “Scream Queen” by one of the journalists at the press conference, Schafer double checked what they meant before replying.
“A scream queen is by definition someone who does a lot of horror movies, right?,” she asked, before suggesting in her answer that she was not planning to focus uniquely on horror in the future.
“There’s no rhyme or rhythm to what I’m doing. I’m rolling with the waves but I love horror movies and screaming is really fun and we got to do a lot of that on Cuckoo.”
Cuckoo was Schafer’s first feature film signing after having done two seasons of Euphoria.
“I had been looking at scripts for a couple of years and hadn’t really found anything and then Tilman’s script came along and then I saw Luz,” she said, referring to Singer’s 2018 German-language supernatural horror debut. “If anyone hasn’t seen Luz yet go watch it, it’s awesome.”
Cuckoo, which is a German-US production between Dusseldorf company Fiction Park and New York-based Waypoint Entertainment with backing from Neon, shot in Germany.
One big take away for Schafer fron her time in the country was the fast food dish of Currywurst which she said had broken her seven year as a vegetarian.
“I’m fully an meat eater now because of the Currywurst I had,” she said.
