Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel was emotional in his post-match reaction to the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

It was a disappointing performance and result for the Red Devils which puts early pressure on Erik ten Hag to improve results after the international break.

Manchester United supporters were looking for an instant response to the defeat at Brighton before the Liverpool game but an underwhelming showing left many fans and pundits disappointed.

Peter Schmeichel has often been vocal about United’s struggles post-Sir Alex Ferguson but shared an emotional reaction to the latest defeat.

Peter Schmeichel reveals it was emotional watching the defeat next to Sir Alex Ferguson

Schmeichel had a very successful career at Old Trafford with Ferguson and has admitted it is tough to witness the downfall of the Red Devils.

Speaking to Optus Sports after the game, the former Danish goalkeeper shared: “I’ve sat with Sir Alex today. It’s really sad.

“I mean what he did for this football club everything that we enjoyed. The three of us [Schmeichel, Michael Owen, and Paul Scholes]. Everything that we enjoyed. The great times and everything, to sit with him and he’s watching this. That for me is really, really sad.

“He did something really extraordinary with this football club. And all of that is not there anymore. The club changed. Then, you have somebody coming in running the club, they’ve supported the manager, they’ve given him money. We’ve played three games, we’ve lost two.

“I don’t see the difference. I could really cry because of that because I want this team to do really, really well.”

Manchester United’s performance today reduced their legends to tears (almost) 😭

‘It’s just really really sad.’
