“I don’t care if it’s Harry Maguire” – Roy Keane & ex-Liverpool striker argue over last-minute Man Utd chance

The last-gasp goal-scoring opportunity that Harry Maguire wasted against Liverpool sparked a debate between Roy Keane and Daniel Sturridge.

Following a back-and-forth second half at Anfield, Manchester United and Liverpool were tied 2-2. However, both sides had the chance to win it in the dying embers of the match. On one end, Virgil van Dijk’s header was too weak and central to trouble Andre Onana, while Maguire failed to hit the target in the final minute of added time.

Joshua Zirkzee could have gone for goal himself, but after drawing Alisson off his line, he laid the ball in the defender’s path, but the latter’s shot went too high, much to the dismay of the Red Devils faithful who would have absolutely cherished a victory over their old rivals, especially amidst their current woes.

After the contest, former Chelsea and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge blamed Zirkzee’s imperfect pass for Maguire’s miss.

“Just don’t bobble it into him, you’ve got all the time in the world to cut the ball back. You’re Premier League footballers playing for Manchester United,” argued the Englishman on Sky Sports (via the Mirror).

However, Keane was having none of it. The former Man Utd captain insists Maguire should have at least hit the target, regardless of the quality of the pass he received.

“I don’t care, Daniel’s saying you could have given him a better pass. Listen, know your players, his [Zirkzee] confidence isn’t sky-high,” argued the Irish legend.

“He’s passing it to a Premier League footballer. You’re passing to an England international player. Know your players, you know he’s not going to give you the perfect pass. Expect a bobble into you. But what you have to do, obviously he’s Harry Maguire, get over there.”

“You’ve got to hit the target Harry, no problem. We saw players earlier today, you said it ‘hit the target’. If it gets blocked, no problem. If that ball came to you, would you fancy your chances of hitting the target?!,

“You’re not going to get the perfect pass last kick of the game. If you get that in training you’re saying ‘just hit the target’. I don’t care if it’s Harry Maguire, he’s an England international player. With Harry sitting here we say ‘what you think Harry?’ He’d go ‘I should’ve hit the target’. 100%. Whatever about the pass not being 100%.”

The 31-year-old has yet to score in the Premier League this season, with his only strike coming in the Europa League.
