I KO’d Wayne Rooney in his kitchen, there was blood everywhere, but I’d be up for round two in the ring

Phil Bardsley has told talkSPORT he'd be up for facing Wayne Rooney in the ring after their infamous spar that went viral in 2015.

Manchester United legend Rooney has held conversations with Misfits Boxing over appearing at one of their next events, although he says returning to management in football is his priority now.

But never say never and boxing would be a significant career change for the former England captain, who was sacked as Birmingham manager in January.

Despite being well-known for his quality on the football pitch, a video of Rooney's efforts with boxing gloves went viral nearly a decade ago.

However, he ended up knocked out on his kitchen floor following a jab from former Manchester United teammate Bardsley, who revealed more about that night.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive, Bardsley said: "It was in his house, we'd been out watching a couple of Super Sunday games and had a skinful, probably too many than what we should have done to be honest.

"But boys will be boys, it was a Sunday afternoon, we got a little bit carried away. We ended up back at Wayne's house, had a little bit of a spar, one thing led to another and next minute there's blood all over the kitchen and all sorts.

"The video was getting sent around, which is a little bit embarrassing form out point of view, considering he was at United at the time as captain and I was at Stoke.

"It was a little bit embarrassing at the time but it is what it is, it's one of those things where you've probably had too many drinks."

He added: "We'd all had a few drinks so it was one of them, the timing was spot on, my jab is pretty accurate to be honest."

Amid the prospect of Rooney entering the ring with Misfits Boxing, Bardsley was asked if he'd be willing to fight him once again.

He wasn't one to doubt a potential bout as he responded: "Yeah probably. Obviously a donation to a charity of our choice and stuff, of course, it'd be a bit of fun. Why not?

"I think he's obviously got a far bigger name than I have but he'd certainly sell an arena out, I'm sure of that."

Hosts Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent then admitted they would both love to watch the fight should it miraculously take place.

But that wait may be for some time with Rooney saying he's not looking at getting into boxing any time soon.

When asked if he's going to be a boxer on the Stick to Football podcast, Rooney said: "You never know!"

He added: "They've been in touch and asked the question but I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing."

"There's been a few obviously. Misfits have been and that's been all over over the news.

"I want to focus on getting back into management, that's my focus."
