Even if Manchester United have struggled subsequently, Mark Schwarzer thinks the team made one wise choice during the summer transfer window.
Erik ten Hag had a great start to his time at Man United, but the team has had a fairly poor season thus far.
With the exception of Rasmus Hojlund who has done well at the club, Mason Mount, Sofyan Amrabat, and Andre Onana have not performed well for United thus far.
In the summer, the team decided to let go of their iconic goalkeeper David de Gea, and Onana was brought in from Inter to take his position.
In spite of Onana’s difficulties since joining Old Trafford, Mark Schwarzer thinks switching goalkpeepers was the right decision.
Speaking on Football’s Greatest, Schwarzer said: “Look at Manchester United, they struggled to replace Peter Schmeichel.
“It took him numerous goalkeepers to find Edwin van der Sar. And even after that they struggled really.
“Look at De Gea his first 18 months were incredibly difficult for him at United. Looking at it now after he’s left, they’re still struggling.
“I actually think… De Gea had an amazing career at United, I think it was the right time.
“I think elements of his game, things were creeping in, there were too many high profile mistakes, certainly in the last two years of his time at the club.
“And I think people took him for granted as well.
“So, I think now, it’s quite amazing, hearing and seeing the line of a lot of fans now because it takes people to leave before they realise what they had and more often than not that’s too late.
“I’m surprised he’s not gone somewhere else, actually I’m surprised he didn’t end up at Real Madrid. Really surprised.”
De Gea was a great servant for the club and he showed that in his time at the club. However, it was the right time for him to move on from the club.
Even though he had a great last season, his mistakes in the last few years have cost United a lot of points in key moments.
He should be remembered fondly by the Man United faithful because of a stellar career which included winning the Man United player of the year award FOUR times.
Since coming back from the Africa Cup of Nations, Onana has shown how good he can be and he has the ability to become a crucial part of the United starting line-up.
