Ian McKellen Reveals If He'd Return as Gandalf for New 'Lord of the Rings' Movie 'The Hunt for Gollum'

Ian McKellen revealed if he would be interested in returning to the Lord of the Rings franchise as Gandalf.

If you missed it, earlier this year it was announced that a new movie called The Hunt for Gollum was in the works and expected to premiere in 2026.

Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the original series, will return for the movie. Should we expect to see Ian in character again? He weighed in during a recent interview.

Speaking to The Times, Ian said that he’d heard “stirrings in Tolkien land” and reports that Gandalf might be featured in the new movie.

“But there is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan,” he said. Despite that, Ian seems very willing to return, with one caveat: “If I’m alive.”

Ian last played the role a decade ago in the prequel movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Elsewhere in the interview he addressed his mortality, saying, “You are aware that this life doesn’t go on for ever.”

“If you want to know that you are mortal you just have to look at your address book,” he says. “And so when a script comes through, or the hint of an offer, you think, ‘This might be my last job. No. I’m not doing that,’” he said.

Another popular Lord of the Rings star revealed if he had been in talks to return the franchise.

Ian revealed two other major stars that were offered the role of Gandalf before he accepted.
