Residents of Aderinola Street and Adeyi Avenue in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on Thursday gathered for a candlelight procession to honour victims of the 2024 Ibadan explosion.

The tragedy, which occurred a year ago in Bodija Estate, claimed at least five lives, leaving over 50 houses and several vehicles severely damaged.

The explosion was caused by illegal miners storing explosive devices in a residential apartment.

Governor Seyi Makinde addressed the incident, attributing it to negligence and inaugurated a 10-member committee in December to oversee the distribution of relief funds.

He emphasized that the support was meant to assist the victims, not as compensation.

Last week, the Bodija Estate Residents’ Association announced plans to honour the victims.

An interdenominational memorial service was held on Thursday, at the Bodija Estate Baptist Church, where the association unveiled the names and faces of the five deceased.

In addition, a Jumat prayer is scheduled for Friday at the Bodija Central Mosque to further honour their memory.
