Liverpool manager Arne Slot has now delivered a transfer update ahead of the transfer deadline later today.

The Dutch manager has revealed that he is not expecting anything in terms of incoming today, but Liverpool could act if an opportunity comes up later on in the day.

He said via James Pearce: “I am not expecting anything but if we see an opportunity we could act.”

The summer transfer window closes later today and Liverpool have signed Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia and Federico Chiesa from Juventus. While there is no doubt that both players could prove to be quality additions to the club in the near future, the window has been an underwhelming one overall.

Liverpool need more signings

Liverpool needed to address some of their key weaknesses heading into the summer transfer window and they have failed to do so. They needed to sign a backup central defender after the departure of Joel Matip and they needed a quality defensive midfielder as well.

The Reds had to use players like Alexis Mac Allister in an anchor role last season and the Argentine international is clearly not suited to that position. They needed to bring in a specialist defensive midfielder in order to allow players like Mac Allister to express themselves and play their natural game. The absence of a quality defensive midfielder left them defensively vulnerable as well.

The Reds have failed to address that weakness so far and it remains to be seen whether they make any late moves to sort out that problem.

Meanwhile, signing a backup central defender would have been ideal as well. Players like Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are prone to picking up injuries and Liverpool could be short of options at the back at times.

Liverpool are expected to push for major trophies this season and it will be interesting to see if they can do so despite the inadequate transfer business this summer.
