The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has stressed the need to provide effective and adequate security architecture in schools and higher institutions of learning across the country.

The IGP who emphasised on this aspect of security at the public presentation of a book titled, ‘Campus Security Operational Manual’, in Makurdi, Benue State capital described the book as a great material that engenders safety and provides a conducive environment for imparting knowledge.

The book was written by Shirsha Chia,  a Senior Security Staff at Joseph Sarwaun Tarka University Makurdi, Security Department.

Represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Benue State Command, Okon Asuquo, the IG said, “This book is very apt at this time when we have cultism on our campuses with all manners of crimes.

“I want to thank the author for providing measures that can be employed to keep our schools safe.”

The book reviewer, Joe Har, who is the Security Adviser to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, described the book as critical and vital for the protection of students and society as a whole.

Har said, “If the measures highlighted in the book are applied, it would go a long way to ensure that your campuses are saved and conducive for learning.”

The Special Adviser submitted that the book is also a useful and potential intellectual material for knowledge impartation on campus safety emergency activation to quell campus crisis, effective management, and guidance on campus security, safety protocol and architecture.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the occasion, who doubles as the Vice-Chancellor, Benue State University, Makurdi, Professor Tor Iorapu who was represented by Professor Ochugudu Upele said that the book would serve as a resource material for both students and teachers in the field of security.

Also, the Chairlady of the occasion, Dr Helen Awunnah, who was represented by Wilfred Joe, said that the book would go a long way to enlighten people on ways to tackle security issues within the typical school environment.

The author, Shirsha Chia disclosed that his commitment towards the support of the schools’ safety initiative in places of learning was borne out of his long-time experiences in school security as a professional during which he served in critical positions to implement effective protection of schools and improve school security management, and ensure efficient security service for the schools and other places of learning.

The author holds a B.Sc. Criminology and Counselling is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in criminology and security studies.
