The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday, held a virtual conference with strategic managers of the Nigeria Police Force, including Commissioners of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, tactical commanders, and the Force Management Team.
During the meeting, Egbetokun applauded officers for their efforts in curbing crime in 2024 and urged them to intensify anti-crime strategies to ensure a significant reduction in crime rates in 2025.
According to a statement on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasised the importance of professionalism in police operations.
“The IGP emphasised the importance of conducting police duties with the highest level of professionalism, stressing the critical need for enhanced specialised training for Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigators to bolster the efficiency and thoroughness of the Force’s investigative capabilities, ensuring investigators are equipped to handle increasingly complex and high-profile criminal cases.
To reinforce professional standards, the IGP directed the immediate implementation of reorientation courses for all police personnel.
“These courses will focus on areas such as human rights, community policing, ethical conduct, and the proportional use of force, reinforcing the Force’s commitment to serving the public with integrity and respect,” the statement added.
Additionally, the IGP announced the introduction of weekly lectures across all levels of the Force, including divisional, area commands, and state levels.
The lectures, he explained, would ensure continuous professional development and keep officers updated on legal frameworks, best practices in policing, and advancements in law enforcement technology.
“The lectures will also provide an opportunity for interactive discussions and knowledge sharing among officers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the Force,” the statement added.
The IGP charged all strategic managers to remain proactive in their commands, encouraging their personnel to maintain professionalism, uphold public peace, and ensure accountability.
“He emphasised that accountability at all levels is crucial to achieving these objectives and that supervisors will be held responsible for any misconduct of their subordinates.
“The IGP reiterated his commitment to building a more effective and accountable police force that enjoys the trust and confidence of the Nigerian public,” he warned.
