IG seeks regional integration to combat crimes at AFRIPOL meeting
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has joined his counterparts at the 12th edition of the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation meeting in Algiers, Algeria.
The Force’s Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a statement and photos shared on X.com on Tuesday.
The two-day event, which commenced on Tuesday, is said to bring together police chiefs from 51 African countries to tackle security challenges in Africa.
The statement read, “The Inspector General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has joined counterparts from across 51 African countries who are members of the African Union to deliberate on global and regional security issues as they affect the African continent at the ongoing African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation meeting in Algiers, Algeria.
“The 12th edition of the Steering Committee for the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation, a technical institution of the African Union holding today 29th to 30th October, 2024, at Algiers, Algeria, will bring together various heads of police institutions to address and deliberate on security and policing challenges faced in the African continent, such as terrorism and terrorism funding, human trafficking, and cybercrime, which are transnational in nature, proffer workable solutions towards tackling these challenges, and improve areas of collaboration and cooperation amongst police institutions in the African region.”
The statement added that as Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs’ Committee, Egbetokun seeks to leverage the platform to strengthen regional integration among police institutions and enhance national security.
It added, “The IGP is attending the meeting in his capacity at the Inspector-General of Police of the most populous black nation and the Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs’ Committee (WAPCCO).
“The NPF, under the leadership of the IGP, hopes to leverage this robust engagement towards ensuring maximum implementation of strategies to curb the crime rate as it affects our dear country, particularly along borders with neighbouring nations.”
