Now that the transfer window is over, the speculation surrounding a number of players has cooled down.

One of the players who was heavily linked with a move away from his club this summer was Giovani Lo Celso.

The Argentinian finally managed to secure a move to La Liga outfit Real Betis but Aston Villa made a late move to sign the midfielder.

According to transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano, Unai Emery’s side were interested in signing the Tottenham midfielder and in the last few hours of the transfer window, they explored the opportunity to sign Lo Celso.

Romano confirmed, via @AlbicelesteTalk:

“In the last few hours, Aston Villa were pushing to get Giovani Lo Celso, but Gio really wanted to return to Real Betis.”

Emery knows Lo Celso well from their time together at Villareal and that could be the reason behind him showing interest in signing the player.

Aston Villa considered a late move for Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham.

The former Tottenham midfielder had become surplus to requirements under manager Ange Postecoglou and his exit from the club this summer was a certainty.

He had seen little playing time at the Tottenham Stadium in recent seasons and had been sent away on loan spells to La Liga.

His failure to secure a place in the starting line up at Spurs forced him to look for a move away from the club.

Giovano Lo Celso joined Real Betis from Tottenham

Villa were interested in signing the midfielder but Lo Celso eventually moved to Real Betis to start a new chapter in his career.

He only started four Premier League games for Spurs last season, making it crystal clear that Postecoglou does not prefer the midfielder.

Aston Villa would be happy with their transfer business this summer, despite missing out on the signing of Lo Celso.

They have signed a number of players over the summer, including prominent names like Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen.
