Following a serious knee injury that required surgery last month, Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen has started his rehabilitation process at the Ciutat Esportiva today.

Indeed, the German goalkeeper is now performing exercises on the pitch under the guidance of the club’s physiotherapists.

Barcelona’s official media channels released encouraging footage of the German keeper working diligently on his recovery exercises on the pitch.

However, the veteran shot-stopper still faces a long road to recovery before considering a return to action.

Ter Stegen’s injury occurred on September 22 during a La Liga match against Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

The German international was hurt after landing on his right leg having jumped to catch the ball in his box. He suffered a severe and visibly distressing injury to his patellar tendon.

The sight of his displaced kneecap caused alarm among both his teammates and Villarreal players due to its graphic nature and the 32-year-old was immediately substituted.

Ter Stegen opted for immediate surgery to minimise his recovery time as much as possible. As things stand, there is no set timeline for his return, and it is unlikely he will be available again this season.

Nevertheless, the Barcelona captain harbours hope of returning towards the business end of the season and helping the team win trophies.

While Ter Stegen has begun doing fieldwork post-surgery, Barcelona have welcomed new signing Wojciech Szczesny into the squad as an emergency replacement.

The Polish goalkeeper, having come out of retirement, admitted that he is ready to play and is certainly expected to be available for this Sunday’s match against Sevilla.
