On Sunday we reported (see below) that Newcastle United defender Jamal Lewis had landed in Brazil.
Not part of Eddie Howe’s plans and now in the final year of his five year contract at Newcastle, the Steve Bruce £15m buy needing a new club.
That new club set to be Sao Paulo FC.
The transfer window in Brazil closes today (Monday 2 September 2024) and this is actually their mid-season window, with the league season running from April to December in Brazil.
Sao Paulo are currently fifth in the table after playing 24 games.
Some people had questioned whether this move for Jamal Lewis was really true. Sending football players to Brazil, sounding a bit like the old sending coals to Newcastle joke.
However, Lewis’ international manager has confirmed the deal is on.
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill confirming that Jamal Lewis would report late for their upcoming Nations League fixtures against Luxembourg and Bulgaria.
“Jamal is planning to join us later in the week after he completes his visa requirements and medical checks in Brazil,
“We wish him the best of luck in his new move to Sao Paulo.”

Sky Sports have now reported that Newcastle United defender Jamal Lewis has arrived in Brazil.
The 26 year old said to be set to finalise a move to Sao Paulo.
Signed by Steve Bruce for £15m and given a five year contract, Jamal Lewis never really convinced he was Premier League level.
The 2020 transfer saw the defender get a five year contract and he has surely played his last game for Newcastle United, as he now has 10 months remaining on that deal.
The 2024 season in Brazil kicked off in April and will end in December.
Having played 24 matches, Sao Paulo are fifth in the table, nine points off Botafogo at the top but Jamal Lewis’ new team with a game in hand on the league leaders.
If/when this Jamal Lewis transfer is officially confirmed, that will make it a total of 13 players moving out of Newcastle United and six signed (see below).

With claims this week of Vlachodimos set to go on loan to Anderlecht in the coming days, whilst a surprise if Isaac Hayden stays at NUFC, he went to Standard Liege last September (2023).’
