Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has revealed that Ademola Lookman’s recent international duty with Nigeria affected the forward’s fitness levels in their 2-0 victory over Venezia, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Gasperini, speaking after the Serie A clash on Saturday, explained that Lookman struggled to contribute defensively and was subsequently substituted due to his inability to play for the team.

“He (Lookman) struggled to get back and help out in defence, so he was not playing for the team. Venezia were improving and I needed to tie the team together more,” Gasperini told DAZN.

The Italian tactician’s comments shed light on the challenges faced by players returning from international duty, particularly those involved in African qualifiers. Lookman was part of the Nigeria squad that endured a harrowing experience during their recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.

The Super Eagles were stranded for over 12 hours at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya after their chartered flight was unexpectedly diverted. The ordeal, which captain William Troost-Ekong described as “disgraceful,” saw the team denied access to food, drink, and communication facilities.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Lookman managed to start for Atalanta against Venezia but was unable to maintain his usual high standards. The 26-year-old did come close to scoring, hitting the crossbar in one of several big chances for La Dea.

The Nigerian forward has been a key player for the Bergamo-based club, contributing three goals and three assists across all competitions this season.

His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Lookman recently being named as the sole African nominee for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

However, recent reports suggest that Lookman could be on the move in the January transfer window. ESPN has reported that several Premier League clubs have expressed strong interest in the forward, who may be available for as little as €25m despite being contracted to Atalanta until 2026.

Gasperini’s comments on Lookman’s fitness come as Atalanta prepare for their upcoming Champions League fixture against Celtic on Wednesday. The manager will be hoping that the Nigeria international can quickly regain his form and fitness as the team looks to progress in both domestic and European competitions.

As the January transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Lookman’s performances and potential next move. For now, the focus remains on his recovery and contribution to Atalanta’s campaign. They currently sit sixth in the Serie A table, level on points with Lazio and Udinese.
