The Chairperson and Leader of the People's National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has called for greater inclusion of women in leadership positions across Ghana, highlighting this important issue on International Women’s Day 2025.
In a press statement issued on Monday, March 10, she emphasised the significant contributions women have made to the nation. The PNP stated that while International Women’s Day is a time for celebration, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing work required to achieve genuine gender equality in Ghana.
The PNP acknowledged the crucial role women have played in Ghana’s development, particularly in managing finances and contributing to the agricultural sector. Despite these achievements, the party highlighted the notable absence of women in key leadership roles, such as the Minister of Finance, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and Minister of Agriculture.
She urged President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise gender inclusivity in his upcoming cabinet reshuffles, calling for a shift in leadership that more accurately reflects the diverse perspectives of Ghana’s population.
The party stressed that it is time to break the cycle of appointments that have repeatedly led Ghana to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) 18 times, advocating instead for a more balanced and representative approach to governance.
The PNP also emphasised the need for a gender-sensitive approach to government appointments, urging the government to uphold the Constitution of Ghana and ensure that women occupy at least 30% of leadership positions across all sectors.
She criticised the government’s plan to establish a Women’s Development Bank, suggesting that the existing Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) could be better leveraged to support women entrepreneurs and small-scale traders more effectively.
The PNP reiterated that empowering women is not just a moral obligation but a vital strategy for sustainable growth in Ghana. On International Women’s Day, the party called for collective action towards gender equality and the full realisation of women’s potential in the country.
This year's International Women's Day was observed on Friday, 8 March, under the theme "For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment."
The theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power, and opportunities for all, fostering a feminist future where no one is left behind.
