The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has stated that it is evident the New Patriotic Party (NPP) left Ghana’s economy in a miserable state.
His remarks came in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) in his second term, delivered on Thursday, 27th February, in Parliament.
According to him, the economic crisis the country is facing is a direct result of reckless financial decisions and mismanagement by the previous administration.
Mr Ayariga emphasised that those responsible for the economic downturn must be held accountable.
He stressed that the Majority in Parliament would fully support the President in ensuring that individuals who contributed to the current financial mess face the appropriate consequences.
"We cannot allow this level of mismanagement to go unpunished. The people of Ghana deserve justice, and the Majority will stand with the President to ensure that happens," he stated.
He further highlighted the severe impact of the economic crisis on ordinary Ghanaians, pointing to rising inflation, high debt levels, and declining living standards.
According to him, the current administration is committed to restoring stability and implementing policies that will rebuild the economy.
"The damage left behind is extensive, but we are determined to fix it and put Ghana back on the path of progress," he assured.
The Majority Leader also called for bipartisan support in Parliament to ensure that Ghana recovers swiftly.
He urged all lawmakers to put national interest above partisan politics and support initiatives aimed at addressing the country’s economic woes.
"Now is the time to prioritise the welfare of our people and work together to bring Ghana out of this economic hardship," he concluded.
