Alan Shearer has been paying tribute to Wallsend Boys Club.

The club was founded in 1904 by the employees and directors of Swan Hunters Shipyard, to provide recreational activities for the apprentices and young people generally in the area.

Whilst it has of course become world-renowned due to football, Wallsend Boys Club has provided access to many sports for young people over the years, especially boxing in the early days.

It is so easy to take things like this for granted.

Wallsend Boys Club and similar great organisations, only exist thanks to the efforts and generosity of so many volunteers.

As Alan Shearer declares: ‘It really is a fabulous place and we are so lucky to have it in our area.’

At the top end of things, Wallsend Boys Club has helped produce almost 100 professionals.

Amongst those are of course so many for Newcastle United, here are just a few of them:

Alan Shearer, Lee Clark, Peter Beardsley, Robbie Elliott, Elliot Anderson, Fraser Forster, Neil McDonald, Steve Watson, Paul Stephenson, Steven Taylor, Alan Thompson

Alan Shearer talking to BBC Radio Newcastle as Wallsend Boys Club celebrates 120 years of great service to the community:

“It really is a fabulous place and we are so lucky to have it in our area.

“It’s such an environment that you feel as if you can express yourself.

“You feel comfortable in who and what you are and you feel comfortable in trying things out.

“You feel at home.

“When you feel comfortable and happy, you’re able to express yourself that much better.”
