Disappointing with Algeria, Riyad Mahrez displays alarming statistics during the last two CAN.
As in 2022 in Cameroon, Algeria saw its journey to CAN 2024 end in the group stage. A huge underperformance for the Fennecs, who also missed qualification for the 2022 World Cup. One disappointment too many for Djamel Belmadi, fired by the Algerian Federation after the defeat against Mauritania (1-0).
Symbol of this new fiasco, Riyad Mahrez was not spared from criticism during the tournament. It must be said that the Algerian star completely missed his subject, as in the previous edition. Indeed, the former Manchester City winger has not scored a single goal or provided an assist in his last six matches played during a CAN.
“It’s not easy to come out of such a failure”
“We are the ones responsible, me first, and I put everyone in it”Mahrez declared after the elimination of Algeria, and continued: “ We have not been up to par over the last 2-3 years and we are paying for it. We are disappointed and very sad for the Algerian supporters and our families, because it is for the people that we play. We are very touched and we hope that things will bounce back with a new coach. I don’t know what my goal will be, my head is upside down. It’s not easy to come out of such a failure. »
