Last night, at 17 years and 60 days, Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi made history by becoming the youngest defender to make his debut for the Spanish national football team.

The young centre-back replaced Aymeric Laporte in the 83rd minute against Colombia, marking his first-ever appearance for the national team a mere two months since making his debut for Barcelona.

Speaking about the landmark, the 17-year-old expressed his delight after the game, saying that he is very proud of his achievement.

“I am very proud of my debut since it was a dream I had since I was little,” he said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

A debut in a defeat

It is to be noted that while it was a moment to remember for Cubarsi, Spain registered a 0-1 loss against Colombia.

During the game, Daniel Munoz executed an impressive acrobatic kick in the second half, securing the win for Colombia. This marked Colombia’s first-ever win against Spain.

For what it is worth, the first half was uneventful, with both teams resting key players. However, Colombia emerged with renewed vigour after halftime.

James Rodriguez, a former Real Madrid attacking midfielder, came off the bench and played a pivotal role in leading his team to their fifth consecutive victory.

Speaking about the match, Cubarsi said: “It is always difficult to lose and I am hurt by the defeat. I appreciate the coach’s trust and try to make the most of it by giving my best. I always try to be myself and play calmly and calmly.”

Meanwhile, when questioned about the guidance he has been given since joining the senior team, he did not hesitate to point out one particular piece of advice; “That I always be myself.”

And finally, with the upcoming Euros on target, he added, “I go calmly, trying to give 100% and if it has to happen, it will happen.”
