All (normal) parents are desperate for their kids to do well.

When your child is a professional football player, then every chance you will experience many highs and lows.

If you have two children who are both pro footballers, then it is another level.

Whilst if they are also twins, there is then for surely something further else on top.

Particularly if you have a season when one of your kids does really well and the other not so well.

Not a problem though this season for the parents of Jacob Murphy and Josh Murphy.

The lifelong Newcastle United fans finding success in the 2023/24 season and really deserving it, after now always having the smoothest of paths.

John and Jacob Murphy came through the Norwich academy together, joining the club in the under-12s age group.

Jacob Murphy getting signed by Premier League Newcastle United in 2017, whilst Josh Murphy a year later joined Premier League Cardiff City.

As I say, this past season, a perfect coming together of great campaigns for both twins.

Jacob Murphy making 28 first team appearances in total in 2023/24, including starting in Italy when Newcastle United drew 0-0 with AC Milan, then making sub appearances in the 4-1 win over PSG and 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

As for Josh Murphy, 11 days ago he scored twice at Wembley to top off a great season, leading Oxford United to promotion with both goals in a 2-0 win over Bolton in the play-off final to decide who would be playing Championship football next season.

Jacob Murphy wasn’t able to get to the match as Newcastle United were playing Brentford the following day.

However, the rest of the Murphy family were there to cheer Josh on.

John Murphy is the dad of the Murphy twins and has been reflecting on a brilliant finale to a great season for the pair.

John Murphy speaking to This is Oxfordshire:

“We have had some fantastic footballing highlights in our family.

“It was probably one of the best because it was pure joy from Josh’s point of view.

“It’s been a quite few years since I have seen him genuinely happy but it was one of the true days you could see in his eyes he was genuinely happy.

“We have seen Champions League with Jacob and Newcastle but I think personally that topped it.

“Just for the pure relief and joy, it’s really hard to describe actually how happy he genuinely was.

“As a father and as parents it was one of the best days of our lives.”

On the bond Josh and Jacob have, John Murphy said:

“Their relationship is very special.

“After every game they are always on the phone with each other.

“I know in the family group chat during the game Jacob was very active but we missed a lot of it because we were in the heat of it.

“They are each other’s biggest fans.”
