The 23-year-old spent four seasons at Signal Iduna Park, scoring 50 goals before moving to Old Trafford in 2021.

But his time at Old Trafford has been hampered by injury, personal issues and more recently, a public spat with boss Erik ten Hag.

Sancho has not featured for United since August but it was all smiles as he sealed his return to Germany, describing the Bundesliga club as ‘home’.

“When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like coming home,” Sancho told Borussia Dortmund’s official website as he appeared delighted to end his Old Trafford nightmare.

“I know the club inside and out, I've always been very close with the fans here, and I've never lost contact with those in charge. I can’t wait to see my teammates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.”

Meanwhile, United published an emotionless statement to wish their £73million man well.

It read: “Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho has rejoined former club Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season.

“The 23-year-old spent four seasons with the Bundesliga team from 2017, registering 50 goals and 64 assists, before completing a transfer to Old Trafford in the summer of 2021.

“Sancho has made 82 Reds appearances so far, scoring 12 goals across all competitions and winning the Carabao Cup in 2023.

“Sancho will now return to Germany on a temporary basis as Borussia Dortmund prepare to resume their Bundesliga campaign after a winter break.

Tony Cascarino insists Jadon Sancho only has himself to blame in feud with Erik ten Hag after Dortmund move nears completion

“The England international of 23 caps leaves with our best wishes for the remainder of this season."

The move offers Sancho the opportunity of much-needed minutes in an environment he is accustomed to.

The winger will provide extra firepower as head coach Edin Terzic plots a way to fire Dortmund back into title contention ahead of the Bundesliga’s return this weekend from its winter break.

Dortmund are a whopping 15-points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen and have no room for error if they have ambitions of closing the gap.

A more pressing concern is the six-point gap to fourth-placed RB Leipzig in the race for Champions League qualification.

Sancho, who will wear the No.10 shirt, will be eligible for next month’s Champions League round-of-16 tie against PSV Eindhoven.
