Italy legend Alessandro Del Piero says Jadon Sancho ‘needs’ to return to Manchester United as it is his ‘destiny’.
The winger served a timely reminder of his undoubted talent with a fantastic performance in Dortmund’s 1-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday.
Sancho, who didn’t play a single minute of Champions League football for United this term, was exiled from the squad in September after a falling out with Erik ten Hag.
The winger refused to apologise to the Dutchman after he accused him of making him a ‘scapegoat’ for United’s poor results.
Dortmund are keen on signing Sancho on a permanent basis this summer, but there’s significant uncertainty over Ten Hag’s position at Old Trafford.
Should the Dutchman be sacked, it could free up Sancho to return to the club.
And Del Piero says that it is Sancho’s ‘destiny’ to make a return to the Theatre of Dreams.
‘When a player like him can play these kind of games, with this kind of quality, you need to go to Man United,’ Del Piero told CBS Sports.
‘Next year maybe, one more year, lets see how he feels, which coach, ok, everything, this kind of player needs to play every year at the top.
‘And Dortmund don’t get me wrong, they deserve to be there, they may go to the final and win the Champions League, but [it would be] something extraordinary for that.
‘With Man United they are supposed to go every year. I know they are struggling, but you have to, you want to achieve with the big clubs and this is the destiny of Man United and the destiny of him at some point.
‘I hope for him that he can go there and perform in that way, with that personality, I really hope so.
‘Tonight he was unbelievable, he was dribbling everybody.’
