Jake Borelli to Leave 'Grey's Anatomy' Next Season, Reason for Big Cast Changes Explained

Jake Borelli will be leaving Grey’s Anatomy during the upcoming 21st season.

The 33-year-old actor joined the cast of the ABC medical drama series in season 14 as Levi Schmitt, making history as the show’s first openly gay male character.

Jake is in negotiations to return for season 21, but only for a limited number of episodes due to some big cast changes that are underway.

Deadline reports that Jake will return “for several episodes to wrap up the story of his character, Levi Schmitt.” A budget cut for season 21 has led to an episode reduction for lead character, with some of the show’s established stars being guaranteed less episodes.

Instead of lowering each cast member’s per-episode rate, the production company is going to give each actor less episodes to lower their overall compensation. Deadline reports that “episodic guarantees are being renegotiated and are expected to go down across the board.”

There are six major stars who need new contracts to return for season 21.
