Jake Gyllenhaal Discusses How Being Legally Blind Helps Him When Acting

Jake Gyllenhaal opened up about being legally blind in a new interview.

If you were unaware, the 43-year-old Road House actor grew up wearing glasses to help with his 20/1250 vision.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Jake explained that he considered his eyesight to be “advantageous,” including professionally.

“I like to think it’s advantageous,” he told the outlet. “I’ve never known anything else. When I can’t see in the morning, before I put on my glasses, it’s a place where I can be with myself.”

Speaking about how being blind has affected his career, Jake said that he has used it to his advantage in certain situations. For instance, he filmed an emotional scene in his movie Southpaw without contact lenses. Doing so made it so that he had to “listen more closely.”
