Jamie Carragher has DEFENDED Gary Neville's celebration that was aimed at Liverpool fans when Manchester United scored a stoppage-time winner against them.

Liverpool legend Carragher hit the headlines for his criticism of Arsenal's celebrations after their win over his former club last weekend.

Gunners captain Martin Odegaard was seen having fun with the club photographer by taking a picture of him after the 3-1 triumph, something that didn't sit well with Carragher.

"Just get down the tunnel. You've won a game, three points, you've been brilliant. Back in the title race, get down the tunnel. I'm serious, honestly," Carragher said.

Sky Sports then tasked Carragher with analysing some of the Premier League's most well-known celebrations and surprisingly backed his fellow pundit Neville.

Rio Ferdinand's last-gasp winner against Liverpool in January 2006, a match Carragher played in, prompted Neville to punch the air in front of the Reds fans in Old Trafford before passionately showing them the Man United badge on his shirt.

However, Carragher has no problems with Neville's antics.

"I'm going to say that was an acceptable celebration,' Carragher said.

"It's the last minute of the game, your biggest rivals, and I can't actually say what the Liverpool supporters were singing to him! So, he's well within his rights for the celebration."

Neville was subsequently fined £5,000 for the celebration and warned about his future conduct by the FA, but later admitted he'd 'gladly pay it again a hundred times'.

In more surprising news Carragher criticised former Liverpool teammate Luis Suarez, suggesting the Uruguayan went 'over the top' when celebrating a goal against Everton at Goodison Park in October 2012.

Suarez opened the scoring in the 2-2 draw and proceeded to run over to then-Toffees boss David Moyes before diving in front of him in response to suggestions by the Scotsman that he was too keen to hit the ground.

"I would say this is a bit over the top," Carragher said. "We actually spoke about this before the game because David Moyes has said he goes to ground too early. Look at Moyesy coming out to the edge of his technical area!

"I would say that was an over-celebration from Luis Suarez because it was so early in the game."

But Carragher had no problems with Jurgen Klopp running on the pitch to celebrate with Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson after Divock Origi's stoppage-time winner over Everton at Anfield in 2018.

"It's the last minute of a Merseyside derby, this is acceptable," Carragher insisted.

"One of the great celebrations in Premier League history. And the commentary as well!"

Carragher was also satisfied with the level of celebration after a rare goal in his career, scored against Fulham in 2006, while also backing Steven Gerrard for kissing the camera after netting a penalty against Man United at Old Trafford in 2014.

The best of all-time in Premier League history in Carragher's opinion is by cult hero Jimmy Bullard, who mock berated his Hull teammates after scoring against Manchester City in November 2009. This was done to imitate then Tigers boss Phil Brown's half time team talk on the Etihad Stadium turf the previous season.
