Jason Derulo looked back on the near-death experience he had when he broke his neck in a gym accident back in 2013.

If you were unaware, the 34-year-old hitmaker had to cancel a tour to recover after suffering the very dangerous break.

He opened up about the experience and how he healed after it in a recent interview on Paris Hilton‘s I Am Paris podcast.

Jason explained that it happened after a trainer had him doing a risky move multiple times in a row. He described the recommendation as “one of the worst ideas somebody’s ever had,” via EW.

“So I slipped during one of the back tucks and I landed on my head, breaking my C2 vertebrae,” he said. Jason recalled being concerned that he was dying after hearing “a big crack.”

He remembered that his mom was in the car, and he wanted to avoid scaring her.

“So after five minutes of laying on the ground, I got myself together and walked to the car holding my neck,” he told Paris. “And then I’m like, ‘Mom, I think I hurt myself a little bit’ — like with that bright kind of voice — ‘I think I hurt myself a little bit inside, we should probably go to the hospital just to check it out.’”

The singer hid how much pain he was in and finally made it to the hospital where the doctor told him that he had what was referred to as “a hangman’s break.” Jason recalled the doctor telling him that he could have wound up “paralyzed or worse.”

Luckily, he was just put on rest for seven months to heal. This effectively ended his tour, but it set the artist up for a comeback after he healed.

“I created a routine for myself: I woke up in the morning, went to the gym and walked, I walked for about 45 minutes a day, and then I spent hours and hours in the studio,” he explained. “Same time, same places every single day, and that’s when I wrote my most successful album, the Talk Dirty album, which had ‘Talk Dirty,’ ‘Other Side,’ ‘Marry Me,’ ‘Wiggle’ — all kinds of hits off that album. It’s because I created a routine, so it was like a common thing in my life when I’m able to really follow a routine, amazing things happen.”
