EXCLUSIVE: More than a decade after his last feature directorial outing with The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, Jay Duplass is back behind the camera for See You When I See You, a comedic family drama to star Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth), David Duchovny (Californication), Hope Davis (Succession), Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), and Ariela Barer (How to Blow Up a Pipeline).

An exploration of the intricacies of grief and healing, currently in production in Atlanta, See You When I See You is scripted by actor, comedian and writer Adam Cayton-Holland (Those Who Can’t). The film is inspired by Cayton-Holland’s acclaimed memoir Tragedy Plus Time: A Tragi-Comic Memoir, the winner of the 2019 Colorado Book Award for Creative Non-Fiction, which examines the impact of his younger sister Lydia’s suicide on him and his family.

Jay Duplass called the project “the kind of deeply personal dramatic comedy that I grew up on, that made me want to become a filmmaker in the first place.”

Fully financed by Astute Films, See You When I See You is produced by Astute President Fred Bernstein, Cayton-Holland, and Winter Coat Films’ Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon. Exec producers include Rick Jackson, as well as Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass and Mel Eslyn of Duplass Brothers Productions. Jeff David is co-producing, with Shuli Harel serving as co-executive producer, and CAA Media Finance repping sales.

Stated Bernstein, “With See You When I See You, Adam Cayton-Holland and Jay Duplass are bringing to audiences an entertaining tale of a family in crisis after the loss of a daughter. The screenplay was inspired by Adam’s own experiences after the suicide of his younger sister. It is funny, touching, and quite moving – the kind of movie I want to see. Astute Films is thrilled to collaborate with Jay and Duplass Brothers Productions to bring it to the screen.”

Alongside brother Mark, with whom he runs Duplass Brothers Productions, Jay is one of independent cinema’s most influential voices whose feature directorial credits include The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, Jeff, Who Lives at Home, Cyrus, Baghead, and breakout effort The Puffy Chair. A prolific producer who co-created Togetherness and Room 104 for HBO, he’s also well known for his acting in numerous films and TV series, including Transparent, The Mindy Project, Beatriz at Dinner, and Landline.

Cayton-Holland is perhaps best known for his work with the comedy trio The Grawlix, and their television series Those Who Can’t, truTV’s first ever full-length scripted comedy. He co-created and starred in the sitcom alongside fellow comedians Ben Roy and Andrew Orvedahl.

Rising actor-filmmaker Raiff previously cast Duplass in his breakout feature Shithouse, which won the Grand Jury Award at SXSW in 2020 and was distributed in North America by IFC Films. He followed up that film with Cha Cha Real Smooth, an acclaimed romantic dramedy which he wrote, directed and starred in opposite Dakota Johnson, which won Sundance’s Audience Award – U.S. Dramatic Competition and went on to release by Apple. His next project coming up for release is the buzzy, independently financed TV series Hal and Harper, in which he stars opposite Mark Ruffalo and Lili Reinhart.

Recently, Duchovny adapted his novel Bucky F*cking Dent into the Tribeca-premiering film Reverse the Curse, in which he stars opposite Stephanie Beatriz, Pamela Adlon, and Logan Marshall-Green. He was also recently seen on HBO’s The Sympathizer, most recently wrapping production on Amazon thriller series Malice.

Davis is coming off of roles in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City and such acclaimed series as Succession, Perry Mason, and Your Honor. Up next, she’ll be seen starring opposite Jeff Daniels, Jared Harris and J.K. Simmons in SK Global’s historical drama Reykjavik.

Next to be seen in The Last of Us Season 2 and Netflix drama Apple Cider Vinegar, Dever’s coming off of roles in Dan Levy’s Netflix pic Good Grief, the sci-fi horror film No One Will Save You for 20/Hulu, and Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins.

Known for starring in films like The Greatest Hits, Bohemian Rhapsody and Chevalier, Boynton has also recently been seen in Barbie and The Pale Blue Eye, along with Ryan Murphy’s The Politician and other series.

Also part of the Season 2 cast of The Last of Us, Barer is best known for co-writing, producing and starring in Neon’s thriller How to Blow Up a Pipeline. Other credits include Marvel’s Runaways, Netflix’s Atypical and Peacock’s Saved by the Bell, to name just a few.

Raiff is repped by UTA, Black Bear, and Fusion Entertainment; Duchovny by CAA, Mosaic, Davis, Shapiro, Lewitt, and Nelson Davis Law; Davis by UTA and Kipperman Management; Dever by UTA and Felker Toczek Suddleson; Boynton by CAA, United Agents, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Barer by Verve, Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment, and Felker Toczek Suddleson.
