Jeff Stelling believes Manchester United currently have two players in their ranks that could be considered the ‘disappointment of the season’.
It’s no secret that the Red Devils’ campaign has been far from the level expected of them. Sunday’s culmination of the 2023/2024 Premier League saw United record their lowest-ever finish in eighth place on 60 points, 31 points away from champions Manchester City, whom they face in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
Lifting the trophy at Wembley and overturning their rivals in the process would mask the below-par league term, as Erik ten Hag would claim a second piece of silverware in his sophomore campaign in the dugout. United do, however, have the odds heavily stacked against them.
Stelling has his say
When discussing which players have fallen short of the mark over the past nine months, Stelling name-dropped two Reds.
“Biggest disappointment of the season? This is a tough one because there have been a few, and the obvious suspects are Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips,” the pundit contemplated on talkSPORT.
“I might just go for Sofyan Amrabat, who was such a star before he came to Manchester United and unfortunately just has not done it at all.”
Amrabat, 27, will be returning to his parent club, Fiorentina, next month following a severely underwhelming loan spell at Old Trafford. There was a £21.4 million buy clause included in his terms, but reports already confirmed earlier in the season that United had no intentions of making his transfer permanent.
