Jennifer Lopez steps out in Mexico City, says she sometimes feels ‘misunderstood’

Here are some photos of Jennifer Lopez attending Tuesday’s Mexico City premiere of Atlas, her latest Netflix film. She looked a lot “softer” at this premiere than she did at the LA premiere one day earlier. She basically wore hot pants and a big ruffled cape, but her hair and makeup are much improved here. This is sort of an underrated or under-appreciated quality for Jennifer: no matter what’s happening in her personal life, the hustle & grind must go on. She will always show up to promote her projects.

All of this Atlas promotion is happening concurrently with her marriage drama, with Ben Affleck reportedly moving out of their shared home and needing some space from J.Lo. While there’s been a lot of speculation about Ben & Jen’s movements, the timeline and the lack of Bennifer sightings for 47 days, I’ve yet to hear one solid story for exactly WHAT happened. Like, a fight, a blowup, one big thing which “caused” Ben to move out. At the LA premiere, J.Lo didn’t answer any questions about Ben, but she said something which is getting a lot of notice:

While speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at her new movie’s premiere on Monday, May 20 at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, Lopez, 54, said she sees similarities between herself and the character she plays, Atlas Shepherd.

Atlas is “a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence,” per the film’s synopsis. After joining a “mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past,” her “only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.”

Admitting she would “always” “infuse a little bit” of herself into the character when playing Atlas, Lopez tells PEOPLE, “We are so different because she’s like … doesn’t wear any of her emotions. She’s so closed off and I am too much emotion sometimes.”

“But at the same time we are both very strong and sure of what they feel,” the musician continues. “At times. She was very sure. She was like, ‘This is what’s happening, please listen to me. Please tell me.’ And felt very misunderstood at times. I can also relate to that a bit.”

Commenting on knowing what she wants to achieve when it comes to creative characters, Lopez says, “I’m very sure of what I want and sometimes I’m not. Sometimes I’m very doubtful of myself, but I follow my instincts more than anything and I find that when I go against that, is when I go wrong.”

Jennifer… feels misunderstood. I can see that, and I do think a lot of people misunderstand her. I’ll say it again – watching Halftime (her documentary filmed in 2019-20) really altered my view of Jennifer and what she’s all about. In some ways, it feels like what happened directly after that moment has been a backslide for J.Lo.
