Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has approved the increase in the minimum wage of the state’s civil servants to N70,000, marking a significant improvement from the previous figure of N30,000.

Arewa PUNCH recalls that President Bola Tinubu had earlier approved the sum of N70,000 as the new minimum wage for workers nationwide.

The governor made the announcement while addressing the welfare of civil servants in the state after receiving a report by the committee on minimum wage, tasked with reviewing the salary structure in the state.

The occasion, which held on Friday, at the Council Chamber, Jigawa State Government House, Dutse, saw Namadi emphasising the importance of ensuring that the state’s workforce is adequately compensated for their services.

He also informed the meeting that the decision to increase the state’s civil service staff reflects the government’s commitment to the well-being of its civil servants.

“This move aims to promote the overall well-being and job satisfaction of civil servants in Jigawa State,” Namadi declared.

He assured the public that the new wage structure would be implemented as soon as possible and would ensure a smooth transition for all parties involved.

The governor further explained that, “the decision to review our workers’ wage comes amidst rising inflation and calls for better living conditions for workers across the country as several states are grappling with wage adjustments to address these concerns.”

Namadi pointed out that the decision was made after a careful consideration of the economic realities and the financial capacity of the state,  expressing optimism that, the increment would alleviate the financial burden on workers, even as he acknowledged the rising cost of living.

Earlier, the state’s Chairman of the Minimum Wage Review Committee who incidentally is also the Jigawa State Head of Service, Muhammad Dagacheri, disclosed that the committee considered various factors, including the rising inflation trend and the need to retain a motivated workforce, when making their recommendations.

As a result, the chairman commended the governor for his confidence in the composition of the committee members, appealing for swift action on their report.

In a remark, the Chairman of the Jigawa State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Sanusi Alhassan Maigatari, while also commending the governor on the effort put in place by his administration said, “Civil servants in the state welcome the news of the upward review of the wage, having eagerly awaited updates on the wage increase.

“With this development, Jigawa State joins the rank of states addressing wage adjustments to ensure better living conditions for workers,” he concluded.
