Jigawa State has withdrawn from a lawsuit challenging the legality of Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies – the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.
Arewa PUNCH reports that this move follows a similar decision by the Benue State government
as both states reconsidered their positions while awaiting judgment.
The withdrawal from the suit was made public on Saturday by the Jigawa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Bello Fanini, who said he had submitted a notice of discontinuance of the case at the Supreme Court.
Notably, Jigawa State’s withdrawal came two days after the Supreme Court conducted the final hearing and postponed the case for judgment.
Following the withdrawal, the Attorney General explained, “Let me at this juncture announce that the Jigawa State Government has withdrawn from this case pending at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. A Notice of the withdrawal, signed by my humble self was filed at Abuja on 24th October, 2024 for service on the Chief Registrar of the Court, the Defendant (the Attorney-General of the Federation), and the states that are plaintiffs in the case.”
However, Belle Fanini stated that the Jigawa State Ministry of Justice has in line with the policy of the administration of Governor Umar Namadi on transparency, accountability, and commitment to the rule of law
achieved a lot of successes in the prosecution of the over 403 persons arrested in connection with the August 1, 2024 riot in Jigawa State, saying that, “As at mid-September, there was not a single person in detention.”
In the Department of Civil Litigation, Fanini explained that by the third quarter under review, his ministry had also succeeded in handling two pre-election cases against the State Independent Electoral Commission prior to the just concluded local government elections which held October 5, 2024.
