Samantha Irvin left WWE unexpectedly just before a recent Monday Night RAW last month and this shocked many people. She said she didn’t enjoy being an announcer, which upset quite a few fans. In fact, Jim Cornette has now criticized her for wanting to become a manager in WWE.
Samantha Irvin recently admitted that she never liked announcing in WWE and that she wanted to do more in the company, such as managing or becoming the General Manager for a brand.
“I don’t like announcing. I’m serious! Announcing was only supposed to be my way in. I wanted to manage, maybe even become general manager one day. But WWE saw no other future for me besides announcer. I love watching the action, but I don’t love being an announcer.”
Samantha Irvin’s comments about not enjoying her role as a WWE announcer upset many fans. Some people criticized her for speaking out against WWE and even called her pathetic. Others speculated that she didn’t like wrestling at all, which caused even more negative reactions. Irvin later explained that she loves WWE and wrestling, but just didn’t enjoy being an announcer.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Jim Cornette addressed Samantha Irvin’s wish to change roles in WWE, questioning her desire to be a manager after leaving her ring announcing job. While he praised her as a talented announcer with a likable personality, he didn’t think she would be a good fit as a manager. Cornette noted that WWE hardly uses traditional managers anymore—Paul Heyman is the only real manager, and even Scarlett Bordeaux, who appears on-screen, doesn’t speak or play a typical manager role.
Cornette argued that Samantha Irvin probably had more TV time as an announcer than she would as a manager without much to do. WWE simply doesn’t have open spots for managers, and he doubts Samantha would be effective in that role unless she could cut strong promos as a heel. In his view, WWE wouldn’t create a manager role just for her.
“What I’m saying here is, we love Samantha’s ring announcing. She’s a very personable young lady, but a general manager? I mean, come on. If she thought she was going to be a manager, look at the roster—there’s one manager in WWE: Paul Heyman, right? Is there another manager? Am I missing someone?
Well, yeah, there’s Scarlett Bordeaux… or Scarlett; she doesn’t use the last name. But she’s just hanging around; she doesn’t speak. Samantha would get more television time being the ring announcer than just wandering around like Scarlett. Paul Ellering? They don’t have the position open; they have general managers. Samantha’s not equipped to be one, and they don’t have managers. She probably wouldn’t be a good one, either, because unless she’s cutting heel promos, why would we need another good-looking girl wandering into the ring with some guy for no reason?”
Cornette also mentioned that in wrestling, and really in any field, it’s not always about doing what you want. He said that if you want to succeed in the business, you should find something you’re great at and stick with it, instead of expecting a custom role. Unless you’re exceptionally talented and lucky, you need to focus on what you can do better than others and make that your spot.
“So maybe it wasn’t fun for her anymore because it wasn’t what she wanted to do. But I don’t see how, in any world, WWE as a company would want to do what she wanted to do with her doing it, you see? It’s not always about what you want to do. If you want to be in the wrestling business, find what you’re good at. If you want to be in any field of endeavor, you can’t pick the field and pick your spot, unless you’re a genetic marvel and all the breaks go your way. If you want to be in this business, figure out what you can do better than what other people can do, and do that.”
Samantha Irvin’s decision to leave WWE was something she had been contemplating for a very long time, as she ultimately wants to focus on her music career now. It’s not known if Irvin could have become a successful manager in WWE, but that’s in the past now and fans would likely move on from Irvin eventually.
