According to Catalunya Radio, Barcelona president Joan Laporta is considering the possibility of bringing forward the elections at FC Barcelona to next summer of 2025, a year before the expiry of his current term.

Some of the Blaugrana president’s advisers are already working on this possibility, evaluating all aspects, from the calendar to infrastructure and logistics issues, given that the renovation work of the Spotify Camp Nou is underway.

According to the report, Laporta is seriously considering the advisability of calling the Barcelona members to the polls earlier than anticipated.

It is because, those at the club see that the situation is favourable to the Blaugrana president, after a few very complicated months that led to a growing mobilisation of the different opposition groups to his management.

The Assembly, a turning point

Laporta finished the summer after a traumatic change on the Barcelona bench, with a club legend like Xavi Hernandez being sacked in a far-from-ideal manner.

Furthermore, only one high-profile signing was made – albeit of the highest level such as Dani Olmo – and another for the future, Pau Víctor.

However, the arrival of Hansi Flick has been a relief for the club. Barcelona are winning again and playing good football, and in the General Assembly, the delegate members gave the green light to the president’s accounts and his board of directors.

Hence, Laporta feels strengthened and is considering the possibility of calling elections in 2025, a year earlier than the date provided for in the club’s statutes, if the good sporting performance is maintained and Flick’s team can win some titles at the end of the season.

Moreover, within the club, they are convinced that they will soon be able to close some important economic agreements they have in negotiation, especially the extension with Nike which is already included in this year’s budget, and which will guarantee financial stability.

Barcelona weighing their options

In this sense, according to the report, some of Laporta’s trusted people are studying different aspects related to the electoral advance at all levels.

For now, it is still a possible future scenario, but we cannot rule out the possibility that Laporta will take advantage of a favourable situation to ask the members to ratify their trust in the project and ensure a new term.

The team’s performance in the coming months and the signing of those economic agreements will help to clear up this uncertainty.
