The victories of Donald Trump and Joe Biden in the Michigan primary were not in doubt tonight, but networks focused on the votes they didn’t get.
Nikki Haley did little campaigning in the state, but she has vowed to stay in at least through Super Tuesday. She lost the South Carolina primary by 20 percentage points, but that was better than some polls suggested.
Biden was facing the prospect of a protest from voters who would cast their ballots for “uncommitted,” as progressives and the state’s heavy population of Arab Americans express unhappiness over the administration’s policy in the Israel-Hamas war. That has been apparent in the wave of pro-Palestinian demonstrations and disruptions calling for a permanent ceasefire.
