John Cena, who was the face of WWE from 2006 to 2016, has accomplished everything a pro wrestler would want in their career. With that said, he admitted that his dog tags were simply a cop-out for not being there for his family.

John Cena’s use of dog tags in WWE had a personal significance tied to his family. While speaking during an appearance with Awkwafina for WIRED, Cena revealed that the dog tags, which featured the names of his parents and brothers, were his way of feeling connected to his family despite struggling in his familial relationships.

Cena admitted that while he used the dog tags as a symbolic gesture to show his family that they were with him, he wasn’t always present as a son and brother, calling the dog tags a cop out.

Rather than relying on the dog tags as a token, Cena decided to focus on making more meaningful personal connections by spending quality time with his family. He moved away from using the dog tags to emphasize his commitment and instead worked on being genuinely present for his loved ones.

“My dog tags used to say the names of my parents, and my brothers. And it was my cop-out way of saying like ‘Hey, you guys are with me.’ But I wasn’t really, this is gonna get deep, I wasn’t really good at being a son and being a brother. So, rather than wear this thing that they could see on TV, what I began to do for them was show up. So I’m trying to be better at showing up and not using a talisman to be like ‘See, I’m there.’ So I ditched the dog tags for more one-on-one time.”

John Cena has grown wiser with age and that is why he is more focused on his upcoming retirement tour, which will begin next year. Despite his busy schedule in Hollywood, Cena will always give priority to his family now and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
