John Cena paid tribute to Val Kilmer in a subtle but powerful way following news of the actor’s passing.
On Wednedsay, Cena posted a photo on Instagram of Kilmer as Doc Holliday from Tombstone, one of his most legendary roles. The post had no caption—just the image of Kilmer in full Western attire, mustache, and all.
The choice to go with that particular character spoke volumes. Kilmer’s portrayal of Doc Holliday in the 1993 film is still widely considered one of the greatest supporting performances in modern cinema. For many, it defined his legacy as an actor who could steal a scene with just a smirk and a line like “I’m your huckleberry.”
Kilmer died Tuesday in Los Angeles from pneumonia after a lengthy battle with throat cancer. He was 65. His daughter, actress Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed the news to The New York Times. Kilmer was first diagnosed in 2015 and later documented his journey in the 2021 film Val.
The tributes have poured in across Hollywood. Michael Mann called him “brilliant” and praised his range in Heat. Josh Brolin remembered him as a “firecracker”. Jennifer Tilly told a wild casting story from The Doors. And now, Cena has added his voice in his own way—with an image that says it all.
Val Kilmer’s career included unforgettable roles in Top Gun, Willow, The Doors, Batman Forever, Heat, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. But for many fans and actors alike, it’s Doc Holliday who stands tallest.
