John Cena has addressed the idea of bringing back past gimmicks in his final WWE run.

The 16-time WWE Champion is in the final year of his career. 2025 will make John Cena’s retirement, with a host of matches celebrating his career likely to take place over the next 12 months.

He has already declared himself for the Royal Rumble match, aiming to match Steve Austin in winning it three times. Cena wants to win the world title before he retires but could bring back some fan-favourite gimmicks before he goes.

John Cena spoke at the Monday Night Raw on Netflix Premiere Post-Show. He was asked about the possibility of seeing Peacemaker or The Prototype (his gimmick in developmental) in WWE before he retires.

Cena said that he has taken elements from his character over the past 20 years into consideration for his final run. While he won’t be portraying those characters outright, fans will notice references to them going forward.

John Cena On Using Past Gimmicks

“So, Peacemaker is a DC thing—you never know, never say never. The great thing about tonight’s farewell tour is that we debuted a new outfit. It was very original in focus. The Prototype—I don’t know if I have the strength to grow out the crappy blonde hair again—wore different colors. He wore the colors of the home team, so to speak. I’m really looking forward to going back to the way I started.”

“Thug Life, the Doctor of Thuganomics, sometimes wore home or away jerseys, so there’s an element of everything already in front of you. Hopefully, by the end of all this, everyone will know that if you want to see a certain facet of the 20 years I’ve been in the business, you’ll get a little sprinkle. I’m definitely focused on that, and hopefully, we can deliver.”
