John Legend Reveals How Close Chrissy Teigen Came To Dying During Pregnancy Loss -- And How Abortion Ban Might Have Killed Her

John Legend got real about how Chrissy Teign nearly died during her pregnancy loss four years ago.

As you may recall, the model suffered from a partial placental abruption and needed to have an abortion to save her life while 20 weeks pregnant with their son Jack in 2020. According to the Cleveland Clinic, that means the placenta separates either completely or partially from the uterus wall before delivery. It’s a life-threatening pregnancy complication. And now, John is getting very candid about how close Chrissy came to dying at the time.

While talking about abortion rights during an appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast on Wednesday, the 45-year-old singer revealed that “her life was in danger” while pregnant in 2020 as she was “bleeding out” and thus needed the lifesaving treatment:

“My wife, she was well past 15 weeks when she had to have an abortion. She was miscarrying and bleeding out, and all these things were happening.”

OMG.

This was an incredibly dangerous situation for Chrissy, and if an abortion ban were in place at the time, it could have killed her — something that is not lost on John. And we aren’t exaggerating here. It’s the sad and rage-inducing reality right now. We’ve already seen the deadly consequences play out after the Supreme Court decided to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, as two women in Georgia lost their lives because they couldn’t receive this important medical care.

That is why John is so vocal about this issue, especially these days. He explained:

“For the government to say, ‘Oh we need to evaluate this to make sure you’re sufficiently dying before you can have an abortion…’ That’s what they’re saying, right? In Texas and in Georgia and in all these states where they have Trump abortion bans. They’re saying the government needs to evaluate whether you are sufficiently dying before you can have an abortion — not your doctor, not you and your family, right? The government.”

And you know what John wants them to do? What so many have pleaded and begged for all along. He stressed the government needs to “stay out of it” and let women make choices for their own bodies:

“Let these women — let them and their families and their doctors — make these decisions. We don’t need the government to be involved in it. Women don’t need the government telling them what to do with their bodies.”

Say it louder for everyone to hear!!! The musician continued:

“People that have an abortion after 15 weeks almost always they wanted to keep the baby but there’s some kind of complication that came up that they have to have an abortion. When we went through all these fertility struggles and then had a miscarriage, it made it even more clear to me how personal everything [is] that happens in that room with your ob-gyn. Everything that happens in that room is private, and it’s so intensely personal and intensely physical. A woman feels every aspect.”

It is amazing John spoke out about such an important matter. Watch the podcast episode (below):
