Jon Dahl Tomasson has been talking about Alexander Isak ahead of this week’s upcoming matches.
The Newcastle United striker training under the Sweden national boss, who has been in the job just over three months.
Jon Dahl Tomasson took on the role with Sweden already ruled out of qualification for the 2024 European Championships in Germany. so now a case of starting the process of trying to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, which will be shared between USA, Mexico and Canada.
Sweden have a couple of friendlies on Wednesday and Saturday, ironically up against two of England’s three Euro group opponents, Denmark and Serbia.
A massive frustration for tournaments such as this one in Germany, when some of the best strikers in Europe, if not the World, don’t see their countries qualify. Neither Erling Haaland nor Alexander Isak will be involved in this tournament.
Jon Dahl Tomasson for one though, has little doubt about the Newcastle United forward’s ability.
With Swedish media outlet Svenska Dagbladet quoting (former NUFC striker Tomasson) on Alexander Isak ahead of these friendlies:
“Alexander Isak is one of the best in the world at deep runs.
“I smile every time I watch his matches [when he is playing for Newcastle United].
“His runs are so good.
“I am so impressed.”
Jon Dahl Tomasson was also quizzed about Alexander Isak having turned up early last week. Isak having returned from Newcastle United’s post-season trip to Australia and then swiftly heading off to meet up with a group made up largely of Sweden Under 21 players, ahead of the main senior group getting together for these friendlies.
Jon Dahl Tomasson:
“Alexander Isak does it because he is a good teammate.
“That is what we need.
“Players who are passionate, players who want to be part of this.”
