Kobbie Mainoo’s scintillating breakout campaign with Manchester United has culminated with him being included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional Euros squad.

The 19-year-old starlet was granted his maiden call-up back in March, proceeding to make his debut and subsequent first-ever start in England’s double-header of fixtures.

It came after he had received widespread plaudits for his outstanding performances at club level, with both United and England fans rallying for the teenager to make the jump from the U19s to the senior national team.

After some deliberation from Southgate, Mainoo was promoted to England’s squad despite initially being called up to Lee Carsley’s U21s for the first time.

As such, he is now well in contention to make the final cut for next month’s Euros, with his inclusion leading to the likes of Jordan Henderson missing out.

The former Liverpool skipper dropped his activist facade to chase the money last summer by joining Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq. Then, after six months, Henderson realised it wasn’t all that it cracked up to be and opted to cut short his tenure prematurely to sign for Ajax – not without leaving a lasting stain on his reputation, that is.

His lack of action in European football and dismal showings for Ajax, who finished outside the Champions League qualification places, meant that he had little to offer the Three Lions as they look to make up for past heartache and reign victorious in Germany in July.

Consequently, the 33-year-old will be unable to add to his 81 caps this time around, and will instead be watching on at home.

Henderson sends message to Mainoo

“I’m sure Kobbie and a few of the other lads who are new to the squad will feel at home straight away and be able to perform whenever they play for England,” Henderson said of United’s emerging talent in a recent interview, cited by The Mirror.

“Every time a new or young player comes into the squad, the experienced players in the group feel a responsibility to make them feel as comfortable as possible.

“We want to make sure that they train well, play for England, express themselves and do what they’ve been doing for their club.”
