After the 2022 World Cup, Fernando Santos gave way to Roberto Martinez for the position of coach. However, the former Everton manager was not the first choice. As revealed In BolaJosé Mourinho was the targeted technician, but the 61-year-old Portuguese technician preferred to refuse the position of coach, to stay at AS Roma.

“The most normal thing would have been for me to accept the invitation. It’s happened twice already, but the timing wasn’t right. During this last invitation, I let emotion prevail over reason and I decided to stay at Roma. It was a mistake. Portugal has one of the best teams in the world at the moment, it’s an incredible team, I know that, but I felt a great connection with Roma and the fans, and that’s why I refused », regretted Mourinho. Finally, the latter was unloaded from the Italian club in January.
