Manchester United look set to confirm the signing of Manuel Ugarte in the final days of the transfer window.
It is clear that Manuel Ugarte was Manchester United’s main target in the midfield this summer and it looks like Erik ten Hag has finally secured his services.
The 23-year-old Uruguayan midfielder only moved to Paris Saint-Germain last summer but has since fallen down the pecking order of Spanish boss Luis Enrique.
It was important for sporting director Dan Ashworth to start addressing the midfield this summer with Casemiro likely to leave in the next 12 months.
The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder could be the perfect partner for Kobbie Mainoo in the double pivot that Ten Hag has opted for this campaign.
He will bring a much-needed fresh dynamic to the team with his abilities to help press and intercept the ball.
Ugarte’s defensive abilities will allow Mainoo to show his box-to-box abilites more frequently.
Matt Spiro believes Ugarte has great potential for success at Old Trafford
The midfielder has not settled in Paris with Enquire favouring a different style of midfielder with an emphasis on a six that can dictate play.
Matt Spiro a France-based journalist recently appeared on BBC Sports’ daily podcast where he lauded Ugarte’s potential.
Speaking on Ugarte, Spiro said: “They are signing a very tenacious midfielder, a young man who is going to be really determined having lost his way a little bit in the second half of last season at PSG.
“If they’re getting the player we saw in the first weeks, first couple of months at PSG, he’s going to be absolutely tremendous.”
