Transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio believes that if Victor Lindelof quits Manchester United, he will only have one choice in Italy.

The Swedish captain cannot leave for free in the summer, as the club recently activated a one year extension clause in his contract.

In an interview with Swedish publication FotballDirekt, the Italian transfer specialist said:

“The only possibility could be AS Roma because they need an extra defender, but they have a financial agreement with UEFA for financial fair play, so they can’t sign players if they don’t sell players”.

Roma is the only practical option if Lindelof want to go to Italy, according to Di Marzio.

He added: “I’ve not heard of any Italian interest in Lindelof in this period, even though a lot of Italian clubs need defenders like Roma, Milan and Napoli. They are trying to get young players and not older players.

“It depends on him if he wants to stay at United. He can play in Italy, Spain, but he might think it’s the right time to go back home and play in his country”.

Given that Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a former teammate and compatriot of Lindelof, has assumed a new role at the Serie A powerhouses, AC Milan may seem like an obvious choice. However, the former striker does not have the ability to choose who gets signed, according to Di Marzio.

Furthermore, Napoli would want to reduce the age of their team rather than add players who are older than 30 so that closes another door for the centre-half.

As per Di Marzio’s statement, Roma is the only team left who has the ability to sell players with large salaries, such as Llorente, Spinazzola or Renato Sanches. The Portugal star’s wages might be used to sign a different player on loan if he leaves.

The Red Devils have been linked with moves for Jean-Clair Todibo, Ronald Araujo, Marc Guehi and most recently, Leny Yoro so the Swede may have to leave the club in order to get more playing time.
