The Anambra State correspondent of Arise News Television, Emeka Monye has instituted a N2 million endowment fund for the best-graduating student in Mass Communications at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Monye, while unveiling the scheme at the institution on Monday said his decision is aimed at promoting academic excellence and scholarship among undergraduates in the department, to give back to the department and to make an impact.
A graduate of the department, Monye said the N2 million prize money will run for the next 10 years, with the best-graduating student of the department getting N200,000 each.
The Owerre-Olubor, Delta State-born journalist said, “I hope that with this development, other well-meaning Nigerians, particularly journalists would follow suit, to as a matter of urgency, encourage intellectualism in institutions of higher learning.”
In a letter of acceptance and recognition, signed on behalf of the university governing council, by the Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of the Career Services Centre of the institution, Leonard Ezeme, the school thanked the benefactor and expressed gratitude for the laudable idea.
The letter reads, “On behalf of the university Governing Council and the university management, the acting Vice Chancellor once again appreciates the kind gesture of Emeka Monye of Arise News for encouraging academic excellence in our university.
“We are using this medium to advise that you always make yourself available or have a representative present during the Prize and Awards Night Convocation Ceremony.
“Please, accept the assurances of the acting Vice-Chancellor’s highest regards.”
