Manchester United’s transfer speculation this week has been largely dominated by links to midfielders.
There are around three-and-a-half weeks of the window remaining, and with only two summer signings added to the squad – one of which is now sidelined for three months – fans are beginning to harbour concerns over how the side can go toe-to-toe with their rivals next term.
2023/2024, despite ending with a trophy, was United’s worst Premier League campaign on record. They finished eighth-placed on 60 points – 31 away from winners Manchester City, who claimed their fourth consecutive title.
To reinforce Erik ten Hag’s options in the middle of the park, in turn, seeing the ageing Casemiro operate a more reduced role, United began targeting Manuel Ugarte last month. They advanced as far as agreeing personal terms with the Uruguayan international, but then the speculation surrounding the prospective deal quickly died down.

Why United cooled their Ugarte pursuit
That’s because Paris Saint-Germain have stood firm in their demands; they want £51 million to sanction the player’s exit before deadline day, which is the same price they forked out for him a year ago.
Understandably, United have been unwilling to meet such a price, and you can’t really blame them.
Journalist Jacque Talbot provided a brief update on PSG’s viewpoint today, sharing that he’s been ‘told’ that the French giants ‘will not look to lower’ their valuation of Ugarte amid ‘protracted talks with Man Utd’. Other clubs remain interested in hashing out a deal.
