Julius Avery (The Pope’s Exorcist) has come aboard to direct They Found Us, the alien abduction thriller from AGC Studios and Smile producer Temple Hill.

Avery takes the reins from Neill Blomkamp. Previously announced Joel Kinnaman is no longer attached to star in the project, which is relocating shoot from Saudi Arabia to Australia.

Casting continues on the project which is aiming to shoot in Australia in the first half of 2025. As we revealed last year, pre-production was shut down on The Found Us, which had been due to shoot in the Saudi region of Neom. The project is now being retooled and relocated.

Pic follows a father and daughter who undertake a camping trip in the Utah wilderness to heal their broken relationship. Attacked by a hostile extraterrestrial lifeform, their lives, not just their relationship, are at stake as they fight with a humanoid beast to stop their abduction to an unknown and terrifying alien world.

AGC International is handling international sales and co-rep US rights with UTA Independent Film Group.

Pic is based on an original screenplay by Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) and is produced by Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen for Temple Hill Entertainment. Ford is onboard as an executive producer along with Temple Hill’s John Fischer.

Australian filmmaker Avery is well known for films including Son of a Gun, Overlord, Samaritan and The Pope’s Exorcist, starring Russell Crowe. AGC’s EVP of Legal & Business Affairs Anant Tamirisa negotiated the directing deal on behalf of AGC and law firm Hansen, Jacobson negotiated on behalf of Temple Hill.

Avery is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment. Slater is represented by UTA, Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead.
