Lisandro Martinez has, unsurprisingly, played an integral role in Argentina’s Copa America campaign thus far.
Manchester United’s stalwart centre-half has started and played the full 90 minutes of Argentina’s opening two fixtures, which has seen them book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition after two successive wins – 2-0 against Canada and 1-0 against Chile.
The world champions’ two clean sheets across the ties are undoubtedly down to the efforts of the formidable partnership Martinez and Cristian Romero, who have shone when deployed next to each other from the offset. Lionel Scaloni sticking with the pair could well see the Argentines retain the trophy when all’s said and done on July 15.
Last night, after Martinez completed the most passes in total as well as the most progressive passes, he received some much-deserved praise from his compatriots on social media.
He shared pictures of himself in action on Instagram, to which Emiliano Martinez commented: “Just different”, while Marcos Acuna called United’s No.6 an “animal”.
