Bernard Sang of Kenya emerged as the champion of the Access Bank 2024 Lagos City Marathon, triumphing over approximately 80 other elite marathoners in the race’s 9th edition held on Saturday morning, clinching the 42km race.

Sang secured the grand prize of $50,000 with an impressive finishing time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 49 seconds, outperforming his compatriots Simon Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo, who secured the second and third positions, respectively, earning $40,000 and $30,000, respectively.

This victory marked an improvement for Sang, who previously secured the third position in the 2023 edition.

In the women’s category, twenty-five-year-old Kebene Chala from Ethiopia emerged as the winner, claiming the same $50,000 prize. Both Sang and Chala’s victories earned them qualification for the marathon event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Shehu Muazu made history as the first Nigerian to cross the finish line, earning a cash prize of N1 million.

The marathon commenced at the National Stadium in Surulere and culminated at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island.
